Overview

SME business cards are issued to small businesses and proprietors, with lower thresholds and simpler documentation than corporate programmes. Frequently the promoter is a co-applicant or guarantor.

For a small business the first benefit is separation. Business and personal spending on one card creates an accounting problem at year end and complicates any future credit application, and separating them costs nothing.

The second is short-term working capital. The interest-free period on a card is effectively free credit for up to around fifty days if the balance is paid in full, which for a business with a gap between paying suppliers and being paid is genuinely useful — and considerably cheaper than a short-term loan.

Who should consider it

Proprietors and small businesses currently mixing business and personal spending. Businesses needing short-term working capital within the interest-free period. Any small business wanting to build a credit record in the business name.

  • Interest-free period functioning as short-term working capital
  • Builds a credit record in the business name
  • Rewards on business spending categories
  • Simpler documentation than corporate programmes
  • Expense tracking and reporting for a small business

How it works with us

  1. 1 We start with the control problem, not the rewards Who spends, on what, with what limits and what approval. Separation of business and personal spending is the first benefit.
  2. 2 Card structure matched to how the business operates Individual liability, corporate liability or a mix. That decision affects reconciliation, credit reporting and control.
  3. 3 Integration with the accounting system checked A feed into your books saves more time than any reward rate returns. It is worth prioritising.
  4. 4 Application with business documentation Financials, registration and banking. Prepared once, properly, for the whole programme.
  5. 5 Policy set and cards issued Limits, categories and approval rules configured before distribution, so the controls exist from day one.

Important considerations

The things a brochure tends to leave out. Read these before you decide.

  • Separation is the main benefit and it costs nothing. Mixing business and personal spending creates an accounting problem at year end and complicates future credit applications.
  • The interest-free period is genuinely useful working capital if you settle in full. Revolving a balance at around thirty-six per cent is among the most expensive business borrowing available.
  • Building a credit record in the business name matters when you later apply for a business loan. Start earlier than you need to.
  • Keep every receipt and reconcile monthly. A card statement is not a substitute for supporting documentation at assessment time.
  • Check whether additional cards for employees are available. Beyond two or three cardholders, a corporate programme is usually the better structure.

Documents required

  • Business registration — incorporation, partnership deed or proprietorship proof
  • PAN of the business and of the authorised signatories
  • GST registration certificate
  • Last two years of financial statements
  • Bank statements for the last six to twelve months
  • Board resolution or authorisation, where applicable
  • KYC of cardholders and authorised signatories

Frequently Asked Questions

Why not just use my personal card for the business?

Because it creates an accounting problem at year end, makes expense substantiation harder, and does nothing to build credit history in the business name. Separation costs nothing and pays off when you next apply for business credit.

How does the interest-free period help my cash flow?

Purchases made just after a statement date are not payable for up to around fifty days. For a business with a gap between paying suppliers and being paid, that is effectively free short-term credit — provided the balance is settled in full, because revolving costs around thirty-six per cent a year.

Does it build my business credit history?

Yes, where the card is issued in the business name. That history matters when you later apply for a working capital facility or a business loan, and starting earlier than you need to is the useful discipline.

Can I get cards for my employees?

Some issuers offer additional cards on an SME product. Beyond two or three cardholders, a corporate card programme with proper controls and consolidated reporting is usually the better structure.

Do I still need to keep receipts?

Yes. A card statement shows the amount and the merchant, not the business purpose. For expense substantiation and any assessment, the supporting documentation still matters.
