Overview
A personal loan is unsecured borrowing with no collateral and no restriction on how the money is used. Approval is quick, sometimes within hours, and disbursal can follow the same day.
That speed is priced. Because the lender has no security, the rate reflects your credit profile alone, and it typically runs several times a home loan rate. The gap between the best and worst rates offered on the same loan amount is very wide, and it is decided almost entirely by your credit score.
Our standard advice is unglamorous: before taking one, check whether a secured alternative exists. A top-up on a home loan, a loan against securities or a loan against a fixed deposit will usually cost half as much. Where none applies, a personal loan is a perfectly reasonable instrument — used deliberately, for a defined purpose, over the shortest tenure you can service.
Who should consider it
Borrowers with a genuine, defined need and no assets to borrow against. Salaried borrowers with strong credit profiles, who access the best rates. Anyone consolidating credit card debt, where even a personal loan rate is a substantial improvement.
It is the wrong instrument for funding a lifestyle gap, and for anyone whose obligations already consume half their income.
Benefits
- No collateral required and no asset at risk
- Fast approval, frequently the same day
- No restriction on end use
- Fixed EMI over a defined tenure, so the cost is predictable
- Far cheaper than revolving credit card debt
- Builds credit history when repaid on schedule
What the loan funds, and what it does not
Read the right-hand column first. It is the one that decides how much you have to arrange yourself.

Funding limits and the treatment of add-ons vary between lenders and move with the borrower profile. The sanction letter you receive is what governs — we will walk you through it before you sign.
How it works with us
- 1 Eligibility checked before any application is filed Each rejected application marks your credit file. We match your profile to lenders who will actually approve it, rather than applying everywhere.
- 2 Compared on total cost, not the advertised rate Processing fee, insurance bundling and prepayment terms often matter more than the headline number.
- 3 We name the cheaper alternative if there is one A top-up on your home loan or a loan against securities is often half the cost. If that applies to you, we will say so.
- 4 One document set, submitted once Prepared properly the first time, which is what makes same-day approval realistic.
- 5 Sanction, disbursal and a repayment plan The sanction states rate, fee and prepayment terms. We set out how prepaying would work before you need it.
Important considerations
The things a brochure tends to leave out. Read these before you decide.
- Check for a secured alternative first. A home loan top-up, a loan against securities or a loan against a fixed deposit is usually half the cost, and the extra paperwork is worth it.
- Your credit score decides the rate, and the spread between bands is very wide. If your score is recoverable within a few months, waiting can be worth several percentage points.
- Do not apply to multiple lenders simultaneously. Each application marks your credit file and a cluster of enquiries makes approval harder.
- Take the shortest tenure you can service. Personal loan interest is expensive and a longer term multiplies it rather than reducing it.
- Read the prepayment terms. Many personal loans charge for foreclosure, and some prohibit it entirely for the first year.
Documents required
- Identity proof — Aadhaar, PAN or passport
- Address proof
- Salaried: last three months of salary slips and Form 16
- Self-employed: last two years of income tax returns with computation
- Bank statements for the last six months
- Employment proof or business registration
- Recent passport-size photograph
- Existing loan and credit card statements
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a personal loan a bad idea?
Not inherently — it is a legitimate instrument for a defined need where no cheaper option exists. What makes it a bad idea is using it because it is easy rather than because it is right. Check for a secured alternative first: a home loan top-up or a loan against securities is typically half the cost.
What credit score do I need?
There is no fixed threshold, and it varies by lender, but the score drives the rate more than any other factor. The spread between the best and worst bands on the same loan is very wide. If your score is recoverable in a few months, waiting is often worth more than shopping lenders.
Should I apply to several lenders to compare?
No. Each formal application creates a hard enquiry on your credit file, and a cluster of them makes you look like a distressed borrower and reduces your chance of approval. Get eligibility assessed first, then apply to one or two.
Can I prepay a personal loan?
Usually, but often with a charge — unlike floating-rate secured loans where RBI rules prohibit it. Many lenders also impose a lock-in for the first six or twelve months. Check both before signing if you intend to clear it early.
Is the interest tax deductible?
Generally not for personal use. Where the funds are demonstrably used for business purposes, or for the purchase or construction of a house, a deduction may be available — but you need documentation of the end use to support it.
