Overview

An endowment plan pays a lump sum on maturity if you survive the term, or the sum assured to your nominee if you do not. It combines guaranteed savings with life cover in a single long-term contract.

It is the most conservative savings product a life insurer offers. Returns are guaranteed at the outset, possibly supplemented by non-guaranteed bonuses, and there is no market exposure at all. For a saver whose priority is certainty, that is exactly the appeal.

The return reflects that certainty. An endowment will generally deliver less than an equity portfolio over fifteen years and often less than a good fixed deposit ladder after costs. What it offers instead is a contractual outcome, a life cover, and no decisions to make for the duration.

Who should consider it

Conservative savers who will not tolerate market volatility and want a defined amount at a defined date. Buyers funding a specific future obligation where certainty matters more than growth.

It also suits someone who needs the contract itself to enforce the discipline — a long-dated commitment that is inconvenient to break is, for some savers, the only structure that works.

Benefits

  • A guaranteed maturity amount, known at the outset
  • Life cover throughout the term
  • No market risk on the guaranteed portion
  • Bonuses may add to the guaranteed amount on participating plans
  • Section 80C on premium; maturity generally exempt under Section 10(10D)
  • Loan facility against the policy once it acquires surrender value

What is covered, and what is not

Read the right-hand column first. It is the one that decides whether a claim is paid.

Typically covered

  • Maturity benefit — the guaranteed sum plus accrued bonuses
  • Death benefit — the sum assured plus bonuses to the nominee
  • Annual bonuses on participating variants
  • Terminal bonus at maturity on some contracts
  • Loan facility against the surrender value
  • Optional riders for critical illness and accidental death

Typically not covered

  • Market-linked returns of any kind
  • Suicide within the first twelve months
  • Full value on early surrender, particularly in the first few years
  • Any guarantee of bonus rates
  • Death from material facts concealed at proposal
  • Inflation protection on the guaranteed amount

Inclusions and exclusions vary between providers and between plans from the same provider. The wording in your own policy document is what governs — we will walk you through it before you buy.

How it works with us

  1. 1 Start with the goal, not the plan A school fee in 2038, an income from 2045, an estate to pass on. The goal decides the structure; the brand is the last decision, not the first.
  2. 2 We separate the protection from the saving You see what the cover costs and what the savings portion is projected to return, as two numbers rather than one blended promise.
  3. 3 Compared against the honest alternative Term insurance plus a mutual fund, on the same premium and the same horizon. Sometimes this plan wins; often it does not, and we say so.
  4. 4 Proposal, medicals and financial underwriting Medicals arranged at home. For larger premiums, insurers assess income as well as health.
  5. 5 Issued, with the illustration on file We keep the benefit illustration you were shown, so what was promised is on record for the whole term.

Important considerations

The things a brochure tends to leave out. Read these before you decide.

  • Ask for the internal rate of return on the guaranteed portion alone, ignoring bonuses. That is the number you are contractually promised, and it is usually more modest than the illustration suggests.
  • A guaranteed amount fixed today loses purchasing power over twenty years. Certainty of amount is not certainty of value.
  • The life cover is small relative to the premium. This is a savings product with cover attached, not protection.
  • Early surrender is expensive and the value builds slowly. Only commit a premium you can sustain for the whole term.
  • Compare against a fixed deposit ladder and against a term plan plus a debt fund. The endowment wins on discipline and on the combined wrapper; it rarely wins on return.

Documents required

  • Completed proposal form with full health disclosure
  • Identity proof — Aadhaar, passport or PAN
  • Address proof
  • PAN card, mandatory for life insurance
  • Income proof — Form 16, salary slips or filed returns
  • Bank statements, for larger premiums
  • Medical reports, where the insurer requires them
  • Recent passport-size photograph

Frequently Asked Questions

What return does an endowment actually give?

Modest. The guaranteed portion typically works out in the region of a long-term fixed deposit, with bonuses adding something on top if declared. Ask specifically for the internal rate of return on the guaranteed portion, which is the only part you are contractually promised.

Is it better than a fixed deposit?

It includes life cover and a tax treatment a deposit does not, and it locks the rate for the whole term. A deposit is liquid, simple and often comparable after costs. The endowment wins where the wrapper and the enforced discipline matter to you.

What happens if I stop paying premiums?

After a minimum number of years the policy acquires a paid-up value and continues at a reduced sum assured. Before that, you may lose most of what you paid. Sustainability of the premium is the central question with this product.

Are bonuses guaranteed?

No. They are declared annually at the insurer's discretion based on its performance. Your illustration separates guaranteed from non-guaranteed amounts, and it is worth reading it that way.

Should this be my main life cover?

No. The sum assured relative to premium is low. Hold a term plan for protection and treat the endowment as the conservative savings component it actually is.
