Overview

Thematic PMS strategies build a portfolio around a single idea — consumption, manufacturing, financialisation, digital transformation — holding companies expected to benefit from it.

The structure compounds concentration twice over. A thematic view is already narrow, and a PMS holds fewer companies than a fund would. Being right about the theme and wrong about the companies within it produces a poor outcome despite the correct call.

Themes also take longer to play out than investors expect. A structural shift that is genuinely occurring can take a decade to show up in share prices, and portfolios positioned for it can lag a broad market index for years in the meantime without anything being wrong.

Who should consider it

Investors with a researched conviction in a specific theme, allocating a satellite portion with a long horizon.

Investors attracted by a theme because it is currently performing should recognise that as the least reliable reason, and consider a diversified strategy instead.

Benefits

  • Concentrated expression of a specific structural view
  • Direct ownership of every holding
  • Manager research within the chosen theme
  • Full transparency of holdings and transactions
  • Potential for substantial outperformance if the theme delivers

What is included, and what is not

Read the right-hand column first. It is the one that tends to surprise people later.

Included

  • A portfolio of companies aligned to the chosen theme
  • Professional research within that theme
  • Direct holding in your own demat account
  • Regular reporting of holdings and performance

Not included

  • Diversification across themes or sectors
  • Protection when the theme underperforms
  • Any guarantee of return
  • Suitability as a core holding

Terms vary between providers and between plans from the same provider. The offer document you receive is what governs — we will walk you through it before you commit.

How it works with us

  1. 1 We test the case against a mutual fund first A ₹50 lakh minimum and higher fees need justifying. If a fund does the same job, that is the honest answer.
  2. 2 Strategy and manager assessed on process, not last year How the portfolio is constructed, how it behaved in a bad year, and how consistent the process has been.
  3. 3 Fee structure understood in full Fixed fee, performance fee, hurdle, high-water mark and exit load. These vary enormously and compound over time.
  4. 4 Account opened and portfolio built Shares are bought in your own name in your own demat account. You see every transaction as it happens.
  5. 5 Reviewed on process and reported for tax Every trade is a taxable event in your hands. We keep the reporting straight and review against the mandate, not the market.

Important considerations

The things a brochure tends to leave out. Read these before you decide.

  • Being right about the theme and wrong about the companies is a real outcome. The concentration means selection matters as much as the thesis.
  • Themes take longer than expected. Be prepared to lag a broad index for years without concluding the strategy has failed.
  • If the reason you are interested is that the theme has recently performed, that is the weakest available reason.
  • Size it as a satellite position. Thematic concentration is a way to express a view, not a way to build a portfolio.
  • Equity investments carry market risk, and thematic concentration carries materially more.

Documents required

  • PAN card
  • Aadhaar or other identity proof
  • Address proof
  • Bank account proof
  • Demat account details, or consent to open one
  • Completed KYC and PMS agreement
  • Power of attorney in favour of the portfolio manager

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the risk of being right about the theme?

That you own the wrong companies within it. A structural shift can be entirely real while the specific businesses you hold fail to capture it — because of competition, execution or valuation. Concentration means selection matters as much as the thesis.

How long do themes take?

Longer than investors expect. A genuine structural shift can take a decade to show up meaningfully in share prices, and a portfolio positioned for it can lag a broad index for years in the meantime without anything having gone wrong.

How do I benchmark it?

With difficulty. A broad market index is a poor comparison for a deliberately narrow portfolio, and a thematic index may not exist. Agreeing the reference point at the outset avoids assessing it against whatever happened to do well.

Should this be a core holding?

No. It is a satellite position expressing a specific view — an amount whose extended underperformance would be irritating rather than damaging. Building a portfolio around one theme concentrates rather than diversifies.

What if I am attracted because the theme is doing well?

That is the weakest reason available. Thematic money consistently arrives after the run, which is when the subsequent period of underperformance begins. If recent performance is your thesis, you do not have one.
