Overview

Sector and thematic investing concentrates holdings into one industry or idea — banking, technology, pharmaceuticals, energy, infrastructure — on a view that the sector will outperform the broader market.

Direct sector investing is more concentrated than a sector mutual fund, which at least holds many companies within the theme. Choosing three or four stocks in one industry combines sector risk with company selection risk, and both have to go right.

Sector cycles are long. An industry can underperform for five years or more while nothing is structurally wrong with the businesses in it. Investors who arrive after a sector has performed — which is when the story is most compelling — typically carry that period.

Who should consider it

Experienced investors with a specific, researched view on an industry, sizing the position as a satellite allocation.

Investors buying because a sector has been performing recently should recognise that as the least reliable reason to buy, and consider a diversified fund instead.

Benefits

  • Concentrated exposure to a sector you have researched
  • Direct ownership rather than fund units
  • Ability to select specific companies within the theme
  • Potential to outperform substantially if the view is right
  • Useful as a small satellite position alongside a diversified core

What is included, and what is not

Read the right-hand column first. It is the one that tends to surprise people later.

Included

  • Direct holdings in companies within the chosen sector
  • Dividends and corporate actions
  • Voting rights
  • Full control over entry, sizing and exit

Not included

  • Diversification, which is deliberately abandoned
  • Protection when the sector underperforms
  • Professional management of the selection
  • Any guarantee of return

Terms vary between providers and between plans from the same provider. The offer document you receive is what governs — we will walk you through it before you commit.

How it works with us

  1. 1 We establish whether direct equity suits you at all For many investors a diversified fund does the same job with less to go wrong. That conversation comes before anything else.
  2. 2 Allocation set before any stock is discussed How much of your portfolio belongs in direct equity, and what stays in funds and fixed income. Position sizing prevents most permanent damage.
  3. 3 Demat and trading account set up properly KYC, nomination and the mandates. Done once, correctly, so nothing stalls when you want to transact.
  4. 4 Research shared, decisions left with you We provide analysis and context. We do not provide tips, and we will not tell you a stock will go up.
  5. 5 Reviewed against the thesis, not the price The question at review is whether the reason you bought still holds — not whether the price has moved since.

Important considerations

The things a brochure tends to leave out. Read these before you decide.

  • Direct sector holding compounds two risks — being wrong about the sector and being wrong about the companies within it. A sector fund at least removes the second.
  • If the reason for buying is recent performance, that is the weakest reason available. Sector money consistently arrives at the wrong point in the cycle.
  • Sector cycles run for years. Be prepared to underperform a diversified portfolio for an extended period without concluding anything has gone wrong.
  • Size the position so that being wrong about one industry does not damage your overall portfolio.
  • Equity investments carry market risk, and concentrated sector positions carry materially more of it.

Documents required

  • PAN card, mandatory for all securities transactions
  • Aadhaar or other identity proof
  • Address proof
  • Bank account proof — cancelled cheque or statement
  • Income proof, for derivatives segment activation
  • Recent passport-size photograph
  • Signature specimen and in-person verification

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy sector stocks or a sector fund?

The fund removes company selection risk while keeping the sector view, which for most investors is the better trade. Direct holding makes sense only if you have a researched view on the specific businesses as well as the industry.

When do investors usually buy sector positions?

After the sector has already performed, which is systematically the worst time. The story is most compelling at the top of a cycle, which is precisely when the subsequent period of underperformance begins.

How long can a sector underperform?

Years, and frequently does, without anything being structurally wrong with the businesses. If you would abandon the position after eighteen months of lagging a diversified portfolio, the horizon does not match the instrument.

How much should I allocate?

A satellite position — an amount whose extended underperformance would be irritating rather than damaging. Sector concentration is a way to express a view, not a way to build a portfolio.

Is this riskier than a diversified equity portfolio?

Considerably. You are exposed to one industry cycle without the moderating effect of diversification, and to your own company selection within it. Equity investments carry market risk, and concentrated positions carry materially more.
