Overview

Student travel insurance covers a period of study abroad rather than a trip. Terms run to a year and are renewable, and cover includes elements no holiday policy has: study interruption, sponsor protection, and compassionate visits by a parent.

Most universities require proof of health cover before enrolment, and many will enrol you into their own plan by default. An Indian student policy frequently costs a fraction of that and satisfies the requirement — but only if it meets the university's stated minimums, which vary and must be checked against the specific waiver form.

The two features that distinguish this class are study interruption, which refunds tuition if illness forces you to abandon a term, and sponsor protection, which continues funding if the parent paying the fees dies or is disabled.

Who should consider it

Every Indian student going abroad to study. Compare the Indian policy against the university plan before accepting the default enrolment — the difference is frequently large.

Benefits

  • Typically far cheaper than the university's own health plan
  • Meets most university insurance requirements, subject to their minimums
  • Study interruption cover, refunding tuition after a covered illness
  • Sponsor protection if the fee-paying parent dies or is disabled
  • Compassionate visit by a parent during a serious admission
  • Mental health and maternity cover on many student plans

What is covered, and what is not

Read the right-hand column first. It is the one that decides whether a claim is paid.

Typically covered

  • Emergency and, on many plans, non-emergency medical treatment
  • Hospitalisation, out-patient care and prescribed medication
  • Mental health consultations, which most student plans now include
  • Study interruption — tuition refunded after a covered illness
  • Sponsor protection on the death or disability of the fee payer
  • Compassionate visit by a family member
  • Personal liability, baggage and passport loss
  • Emergency evacuation and repatriation

Typically not covered

  • Pre-existing conditions, unless declared and accepted
  • Treatment in India during vacation, on most plans
  • Injuries from organised competitive sport, unless extended
  • Cover beyond the policy period, which must be renewed on time
  • Alcohol and substance-related incidents
  • Elective and cosmetic procedures

Inclusions and exclusions vary between providers and between plans from the same provider. The wording in your own policy document is what governs — we will walk you through it before you buy.

How it works with us

  1. 1 Tell us where, how long, and who is going Destination, dates, ages and any medical history. Destination decides the sum insured; age and history decide the premium.
  2. 2 We match the cover to the visa and the country Schengen has a minimum medical requirement. The US has no minimum and the highest costs. Both need answering properly.
  3. 3 Declare conditions and activities before you buy A pre-existing condition or a scheduled trek changes the policy. Declaring it costs a little; not declaring it costs the claim.
  4. 4 Policy issued the same day, usually within the hour Certificate and emergency numbers by email, in the format embassies accept.
  5. 5 One number to call from anywhere You call the assistance line first, before treatment. That call is what makes a claim cashless rather than a reimbursement fight.

Important considerations

The things a brochure tends to leave out. Read these before you decide.

  • Read the university's waiver form before buying, not after. It states the minimum sum insured, deductible and required benefits, and a policy that misses one line will be rejected.
  • Renew before expiry. A lapse mid-course means both an uninsured student and, at many universities, an immediate enrolment into their expensive default plan.
  • Most plans exclude treatment in India during vacations. If the student returns home, an Indian health policy is the other half of the arrangement.
  • Check the mental health benefit specifically. It is one of the most-used features on student policies and one of the most variable between plans.
  • Sponsor protection is genuinely valuable and easy to overlook. If one parent funds the entire course, it is the feature that keeps the degree on track.

Documents required

  • Passport copy of every traveller
  • Travel dates and itinerary
  • Visa, where already issued
  • Declaration of any pre-existing medical conditions
  • Details of any adventure or sporting activities planned
  • Student visa and university admission letter, for student policies
