Overview

Goods carrying vehicle insurance covers the truck: third-party liability, own damage, and the statutory cover for the driver and any cleaner or attendant employed on it. It is the compulsory foundation of any road transport operation.

What it does not cover is the load. This is the most consequential misunderstanding in the class. A motor policy insures the vehicle as an asset; the goods inside it are a separate risk requiring a marine transit or goods-in-transit policy, and a single load can be worth several times the truck carrying it.

The second point is use. A goods carrier operating on a national permit, carrying hazardous goods, or running outside its declared area is operating outside the assumptions its premium was built on.

Who should consider it

Owner-operators of a single truck, transport companies, and any business that runs its own delivery vehicles rather than outsourcing. Manufacturers and traders who move their own goods should read the cargo point above particularly carefully.

Benefits

  • Statutory third-party liability, without which the vehicle cannot lawfully operate
  • Own damage cover for a high-value working asset
  • Driver, cleaner and attendant covered under the statutory extension
  • Towing and removal cover, which matters on a laden breakdown
  • Fleet structures once the vehicle count grows
  • Cashless repair to reduce the days a truck sits idle

What is covered, and what is not

Read the right-hand column first. It is the one that decides whether a claim is paid.

Typically covered

  • Third-party death, injury and property damage
  • Own damage from accident, fire and theft
  • Natural calamities and man-made perils
  • Driver, cleaner and attendant under the statutory extension
  • Towing and removal after an accident, up to the policy limit
  • Damage while the vehicle is in transit by rail, air or waterway
  • Personal accident cover for the owner-driver

Typically not covered

  • The goods being carried — that is a separate transit policy
  • Overloading beyond the registered laden weight
  • Carriage of hazardous goods without the specific endorsement
  • Operation outside the permit area
  • A driver without the correct commercial licence class
  • Consequential loss, including delayed delivery and contractual penalties
  • Wear, tear and mechanical breakdown

Inclusions and exclusions vary between providers and between plans from the same provider. The wording in your own policy document is what governs — we will walk you through it before you buy.

How it works with us

  1. 1 Send us the vehicle details Registration number, make and variant, year, and your current policy if you have one. Thirty seconds of typing.
  2. 2 We check what you are actually insured for IDV, add-ons, voluntary excess and no-claim bonus. Most renewals we see carry an IDV set years ago and never revisited.
  3. 3 Two or three quotes, compared on cover and not on price With the garage network in your city and each insurer's claim record put next to the premium.
  4. 4 Inspection where the law requires it A break in cover or a mid-term insurer change means an inspection. We arrange it, usually by video.
  5. 5 Policy issued, and we handle the claim when it comes You call us at the garage, not a helpline. We deal with the surveyor and the settlement.

Important considerations

The things a brochure tends to leave out. Read these before you decide.

  • The load is not insured by this policy. If you carry your own goods, a marine transit or annual goods-in-transit cover is the other half of the arrangement and is usually the cheaper half.
  • Overloading is the most common and most easily proven policy breach in this class. The weighbridge slip after an incident is not a document you can argue with.
  • Carrying hazardous goods without the endorsement puts the whole claim at risk, including ordinary collision damage unrelated to the cargo.
  • Downtime costs a transport operator more than the repair does. Price a loss-of-use extension deliberately rather than absorbing it.
  • Keep driver documentation current across every driver who touches the vehicle. Commercial licence class is checked on every serious claim.

Documents required

  • Registration certificate (RC) of the vehicle
  • Previous policy copy, for no-claim bonus and continuity
  • Driving licence of the owner or the usual driver
  • Identity and address proof
  • PAN card, where the premium crosses the reporting threshold
  • Invoice or delivery note, for a new vehicle
  • Vehicle inspection report, where there has been a break in cover

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this policy cover the goods I am carrying?

No. It insures the vehicle, its liabilities and its crew. The cargo needs a goods-in-transit or marine transit policy, and on most routes the load is worth considerably more than the truck. This is the single most common gap we find in transport operations.

What happens if the truck is overloaded when the accident occurs?

Overloading breaches the policy and is easily established after the fact. Insurers routinely reduce or reject claims on this basis, and the registered laden weight is a hard limit rather than a target.

Do I need a special endorsement for hazardous goods?

Yes, and a driver licensed for them. Carrying hazardous cargo without both can invalidate the entire claim, including damage that had nothing to do with the cargo itself.

Is my driver covered?

Yes, under the statutory extension, provided the driver holds the correct commercial licence class and is lawfully employed. That extension is a compliance requirement as much as an insurance one.

Can I insure several trucks under one policy?

Once you run a handful of vehicles, a fleet policy usually costs less and is considerably easier to administer — one renewal date, one schedule, and claims experience assessed across the fleet rather than vehicle by vehicle.
