Overview

A health-linked term plan adjusts your premium according to health metrics tracked during the policy. Improve measurable markers — weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, activity levels — and the premium falls or the cover rises. Let them deteriorate and the discount is withdrawn.

The rationale is straightforward from the insurer's side. A policyholder whose health improves is a better risk, and sharing part of that gain encourages the behaviour that produces it. From the buyer's side, it converts a fixed cost into one you can influence.

The discounts are real but bounded, and the tracking obligations are genuine. This suits someone who will actually engage with the programme. For someone who will not, an ordinary term plan at the standard rate is the simpler and often cheaper answer.

Who should consider it

People already committed to measurable fitness, who will find the tracking natural rather than intrusive. People with a borderline metric — slightly raised BMI or blood pressure — who expect to improve it and would like the premium to follow.

It suits less well anyone uncomfortable sharing continuous health data with an insurer, or anyone who knows they will not sustain engagement past the first few months.

Benefits

  • Premium discounts tied to measurable and verifiable health improvement
  • Cover can increase on some plans instead of the premium falling
  • Annual health assessments included, often at the insurer's cost
  • Wellness programme access, sometimes with partner benefits
  • An initial discount for meeting entry health criteria
  • Section 80C on premium; death benefit tax-free under Section 10(10D)

What is covered, and what is not

Read the right-hand column first. It is the one that decides whether a claim is paid.

Typically covered

  • Death benefit — the full sum assured to the nominee
  • Annual or periodic health assessment, usually insurer-funded
  • Premium adjustment based on assessed health metrics
  • Wellness programme membership, where the plan provides it
  • Terminal illness acceleration on most plans
  • Optional critical illness and accidental death riders

Typically not covered

  • Discounts, where assessments are not completed on schedule
  • Any guarantee that the discount will continue — it is reviewable
  • Suicide within the first twelve months
  • Death from material facts concealed at proposal
  • Any survival or maturity benefit
  • Metrics not covered by the programme, however much they improve

Inclusions and exclusions vary between providers and between plans from the same provider. The wording in your own policy document is what governs — we will walk you through it before you buy.

How it works with us

  1. 1 We work out the cover, before the plan Income, liabilities, dependants and the years they need supporting. The sum assured is the decision; the brand is a detail.
  2. 2 Underwriting reality check Health, occupation, smoking and family history decide who will accept you and at what price. Better to know now than after a rejection.
  3. 3 Two or three quotes with the claim record attached Premium matters, but so does the insurer's claim settlement history and how it treats early claims.
  4. 4 Proposal, medicals and financial underwriting Medicals are arranged at home. For larger cover the insurer will also want income proof — we prepare that file properly.
  5. 5 Policy issued, and your family knows where it is A term plan nobody can find is a term plan that does not pay. We make sure the nominee has the details.

Important considerations

The things a brochure tends to leave out. Read these before you decide.

  • Compare the post-discount premium against a plain term plan at the standard rate. The base premium here is sometimes higher, so the discount has to work before you are ahead.
  • The discount is reviewable, not guaranteed. Model the premium on the assumption that you might not sustain the improvement.
  • Missing an assessment usually costs the discount. If annual appointments are the kind of thing you postpone, this plan will cost you more, not less.
  • Understand what health data you are sharing and for how long. That is a personal decision, and it is a legitimate reason to prefer an ordinary plan.
  • The protection is identical to a plain term plan. Never let the wellness programme distract from the sum assured, which is the only number that matters at claim time.

Documents required

  • Completed proposal form with full health and lifestyle disclosure
  • Identity proof — Aadhaar, passport or PAN
  • Address proof
  • PAN card, mandatory for life insurance
  • Income proof — salary slips, Form 16 or filed returns
  • Bank statements, for larger sums assured
  • Medical reports, arranged by the insurer
  • Recent passport-size photograph

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can the premium actually fall?

Commonly in the range of ten to twenty-five per cent, depending on the plan and on the metrics achieved. Compare the discounted figure against an ordinary term plan's standard rate, because the starting premium here is sometimes higher.

What happens if my health worsens?

The discount is generally withdrawn and the premium returns towards the standard rate. It works in both directions, which is the point. The cover itself is not affected.

Do I have to wear a fitness tracker?

Some plans use wearable data, others rely on periodic clinical assessments. If continuous tracking is not something you want, look for a plan that assesses annually instead — they exist.

What if I miss an assessment?

You usually lose the discount for that period. The obligations are real, and a plan that depends on you keeping appointments is a poor fit if that is not how you operate.

Is the death benefit any different?

No. It is an ordinary term plan with a variable premium attached. The sum assured, the claim process and the tax treatment are the same as any other term policy.
