Overview
Large and mid cap PMS strategies invest across established companies and the tier below them, combining the stability and liquidity of large caps with the growth potential of mid caps.
The segment is a reasonable middle ground. Mid caps have historically offered higher growth than large caps, and they remain liquid enough that a manager can build and exit positions without the constraints small caps impose.
The volatility sits between the two. A large and mid cap portfolio will fall more than a pure large cap one in a downturn and less than a small cap one, and it will typically recover faster than small caps because liquidity holds up better.
Who should consider it
Investors above the minimum wanting equity exposure with growth potential and reasonable liquidity. Investors who find pure small cap volatility uncomfortable but want more than large cap growth.
Benefits
- Growth potential above pure large cap portfolios
- Better liquidity than small cap strategies
- Concentration levels a mutual fund cannot take
- Direct ownership of every holding
- Full transparency of holdings and transactions
- Volatility between large and small cap portfolios

How it works with us
- 1 We test the case against a mutual fund first A ₹50 lakh minimum and higher fees need justifying. If a fund does the same job, that is the honest answer.
- 2 Strategy and manager assessed on process, not last year How the portfolio is constructed, how it behaved in a bad year, and how consistent the process has been.
- 3 Fee structure understood in full Fixed fee, performance fee, hurdle, high-water mark and exit load. These vary enormously and compound over time.
- 4 Account opened and portfolio built Shares are bought in your own name in your own demat account. You see every transaction as it happens.
- 5 Reviewed on process and reported for tax Every trade is a taxable event in your hands. We keep the reporting straight and review against the mandate, not the market.
Important considerations
The things a brochure tends to leave out. Read these before you decide.
- Ask about the actual large-to-mid split, and how much discretion the manager has to change it. A mandate that drifts heavily into mid caps is a different risk.
- Mid caps fall further than large caps in downturns. Expect a portfolio here to be more volatile than a large cap fund.
- Compare net of fees against a large and mid cap mutual fund over a full cycle.
- Turnover creates taxable events in your hands, unlike a fund rebalancing internally.
- Equity investments are subject to market risk. Past performance does not indicate future returns.
Documents required

Frequently Asked Questions
Why combine large and mid caps?
To get growth potential above pure large caps while keeping enough liquidity that the manager can build and exit positions freely. It is a middle ground — more volatile than large cap, considerably less constrained than small cap.
How volatile is it?
Between the two. It falls further than a large cap portfolio in a downturn and less than a small cap one, and it typically recovers faster than small caps because liquidity holds up better when everyone wants to sell.
What proportion is in mid caps?
It varies by mandate, and the manager's discretion to shift the split matters as much as the current position. A strategy that drifts heavily into mid caps during a strong run is a different risk from the one you assessed.
Is this better than a mutual fund in the same segment?
It offers more concentration, direct ownership and customisation, at materially higher cost with a tax drag from turnover. Whether that adds value net of everything is the honest test, and it should be assessed over a full cycle.
What returns should I expect?
We do not project returns. Equity investments are subject to market risk, values can fall as well as rise, and past performance does not indicate future results.
