Overview
A travel loan is a personal loan taken to fund a trip. As with every purpose-branded personal loan, the product itself is standard — the rate, tenure and underwriting are those of any unsecured borrowing.
Borrowing for consumption is the least defensible use of expensive credit, and we will say so plainly. A holiday funded on an eleven per cent loan over three years costs substantially more than the holiday.
That said, there are situations where it is reasonable: a milestone trip that will not come again, a family gathering abroad, a trip already partly committed when circumstances changed. Where it is the right decision, take the shortest tenure and clear it quickly rather than letting it become a permanent line in your budget.
Who should consider it
Travellers funding a genuine once-in-a-lifetime trip with a clear plan to repay quickly. Anyone facing an unavoidable and already-committed travel cost.
It is not a sensible way to fund annual holidays. Saving for those through a recurring deposit or a short-duration fund costs nothing and earns something.
Benefits
- Funds a trip without liquidating investments
- Fast disbursal ahead of booking deadlines
- Fixed EMI over a defined tenure
- No collateral required
- Cheaper than funding travel on a credit card
- Can be repaid early where the lender permits
What the loan funds, and what it does not
Read the right-hand column first. It is the one that decides how much you have to arrange yourself.
Usually funded
- Flights, accommodation and tour packages
- Visa fees and travel insurance
- Local travel and activity costs
- Foreign exchange for the trip
Usually not funded
- Processing fee, usually deducted from disbursal
- Any tax deduction on interest
- A preferential rate — this is standard personal loan pricing
- Amounts beyond what your income supports
Funding limits and the treatment of add-ons vary between lenders and move with the borrower profile. The sanction letter you receive is what governs — we will walk you through it before you sign.
How it works with us
- 1 Eligibility checked before any application is filed Each rejected application marks your credit file. We match your profile to lenders who will actually approve it, rather than applying everywhere.
- 2 Compared on total cost, not the advertised rate Processing fee, insurance bundling and prepayment terms often matter more than the headline number.
- 3 We name the cheaper alternative if there is one A top-up on your home loan or a loan against securities is often half the cost. If that applies to you, we will say so.
- 4 One document set, submitted once Prepared properly the first time, which is what makes same-day approval realistic.
- 5 Sanction, disbursal and a repayment plan The sanction states rate, fee and prepayment terms. We set out how prepaying would work before you need it.
Important considerations
The things a brochure tends to leave out. Read these before you decide.
- Borrowing for consumption is the most expensive use of credit. If the trip can wait twelve months, saving for it costs nothing and earns something.
- Take the shortest tenure. A holiday you are still paying for three years later is a worse memory than it needs to be.
- Buy travel insurance regardless. It costs very little relative to the trip and covers the medical exposure that no domestic policy touches.
- A credit card EMI conversion is usually more expensive than a personal loan for the same amount. Compare both if you have already booked.
- If this would be an annual pattern, the honest answer is a travel fund rather than a travel loan.

- Address proof
- Salaried: last three months of salary slips and Form 16
- Self-employed: last two years of income tax returns with computation
- Bank statements for the last six months
- Employment proof or business registration
- Recent passport-size photograph
- Existing loan and credit card statements
Frequently Asked Questions
Is borrowing for a holiday ever sensible?
For a genuine milestone that will not recur, and with a clear plan to repay quickly, it can be. As an annual pattern it is an expensive habit — a recurring deposit or short-duration fund does the same job at no cost and with some return.
Is there a special travel loan rate?
No. It is an ordinary personal loan with a purpose label. The rate is driven by your credit profile, not by what the money is for.
Is it cheaper than putting the trip on a credit card?
Considerably, particularly against revolving card interest. Compared with a card EMI conversion the gap narrows, but a personal loan is usually still cheaper — compare the total cost, including any conversion fee.
What tenure should I take?
The shortest you can service. Extending a travel loan to reduce the EMI means paying for a holiday long after the photographs have stopped being interesting, and it costs meaningfully more.
Should I also buy travel insurance?
Yes, and it is unrelated to the loan. Emergency medical treatment abroad is the exposure that matters, no Indian health policy covers it, and the premium is a small fraction of the trip cost.
