Overview
Diabetes screening measures blood glucose and, through HbA1c, average blood sugar over the preceding two to three months. Together these indicate whether glucose regulation is normal, impaired, or in the diabetic range.
The reason screening matters is that type 2 diabetes develops gradually and frequently produces no symptoms until it is well established. India has a substantial diabetic and pre-diabetic population, and a large proportion of it is undiagnosed.
Detection at the pre-diabetic stage is genuinely consequential. Progression to diabetes is not inevitable at that point, and evidence supports that changes in diet, weight and activity can alter the trajectory. That window only exists if the condition is found.
Who should consider it
Adults over thirty as part of routine screening. Anyone with a family history of diabetes. People who are overweight, sedentary, or have high blood pressure. Women with a history of gestational diabetes. Anyone previously found to be pre-diabetic.
Benefits
- Detects a condition that is frequently silent until advanced
- HbA1c reflects average control over two to three months
- Identifies the pre-diabetic stage, where trajectory can change
- Inexpensive relative to the consequences of late detection
- Home collection available
- Quick reporting, usually within a day
What is included, and what is not
Read the right-hand column first. It is the one that tends to surprise people later.
Included
- Fasting blood glucose
- Post-prandial blood glucose, on many panels
- HbA1c, reflecting average control over 2 to 3 months
- Doctor consultation to interpret the results
- Comparison against previous results where available
Not included
- Diagnosis, which is a clinical decision by a doctor
- Treatment or medication
- Complication screening — eye, kidney and nerve assessment
- Continuous glucose monitoring
- Dietary and lifestyle counselling beyond the consultation
Terms vary between providers and between plans from the same provider. The offer document you receive is what governs — we will walk you through it before you commit.
How it works with us
- 1 We match the panel to your age and history A check-up appropriate at thirty is different from one at fifty-five. Family history changes it again.
- 2 Slot booked at a centre near you Partner laboratories and hospitals across cities, with home collection where the panel allows it.
- 3 Preparation instructions sent in advance Fasting requirements and medication timing. Getting these wrong is the most common reason a test has to be repeated.
- 4 Sample collection and reporting Reports delivered digitally, usually within 24 to 48 hours depending on the panel.
- 5 Doctor consultation to interpret the results A report is data, not a diagnosis. Interpretation belongs with a qualified doctor, and we arrange that.
Important considerations
The things a brochure tends to leave out. Read these before you decide.
- HbA1c does not require fasting and reflects control over months rather than a single moment. It is often the more useful of the two tests.
- A single elevated reading is not a diagnosis. Confirmation and clinical assessment by a doctor is what establishes one.
- Pre-diabetes is a genuinely actionable finding. Progression is not inevitable, and that is the reason screening at this stage matters.
- If you have a family history, screening earlier and more often is worth discussing with your doctor.
- Certain conditions, including anaemia, can affect HbA1c accuracy. Tell your doctor about any known conditions.
Documents required
- Identity proof for registration at the centre
- Age proof, where the package is age-specific
- Previous test reports, where available for comparison
- List of current medications
- Insurance details, where the check-up is covered by a policy
- Doctor's prescription, where specific tests require one
Frequently Asked Questions
What is HbA1c and why does it matter?
It reflects average blood sugar over the preceding two to three months rather than at a single moment, which makes it less affected by what you ate yesterday. It also requires no fasting, which is why it is often the more practical and more informative test.
Do I need to fast?
For fasting glucose, yes — typically eight to twelve hours. HbA1c requires no fasting at all. Many panels include both, in which case the fasting requirement applies.
What does pre-diabetes mean?
That glucose regulation is impaired but not yet in the diabetic range. It is a genuinely actionable finding — progression is not inevitable, and evidence supports that changes to diet, weight and activity can alter the trajectory. That window only exists if the condition is detected.
One reading was high. Do I have diabetes?
A single elevated result is not a diagnosis. Confirmation, clinical assessment and consideration of other factors is what establishes one, and that is a doctor's judgement rather than a conclusion to draw from a report.
How often should I be screened?
Adults over thirty as part of routine screening, and more often with a family history, excess weight, high blood pressure or a previous pre-diabetic result. Your doctor is the right person to set the interval for your circumstances.
