Overview
A guaranteed return plan states, at the point of purchase, exactly what you will receive and when. There are no bonuses to be declared, no fund performance to track and no ambiguity — the number in the contract is the number you get.
That certainty has real value in a specific circumstance: a known obligation at a known date. A fee due in 2038, a repayment falling due in 2035, a defined amount you have promised to someone. For those, a guarantee is worth more than a higher expected return that might not arrive on time.
The return itself is modest, typically in the territory of a long-dated fixed deposit. What distinguishes it is that the rate is locked for the entire term, which a deposit ladder cannot do — and in a falling rate environment that lock is worth considerably more than it appears.
Who should consider it
Savers funding a specific future obligation where the amount matters more than the upside. Conservative savers with no tolerance for variability. Anyone wanting to lock a long-term rate while rates are favourable.
It is not the right instrument for general wealth accumulation over a long horizon, where the gap against an equity portfolio compounds into a large difference.
Benefits
- The maturity amount is contractually fixed and known at purchase
- The rate is locked for the full term regardless of what happens to rates
- No market risk and nothing to monitor
- Life cover alongside the guaranteed savings
- Section 80C on premium; maturity generally exempt under Section 10(10D)
- Income options available instead of a lump sum, on many contracts
What is covered, and what is not
Read the right-hand column first. It is the one that decides whether a claim is paid.
Typically covered
- Guaranteed maturity benefit, stated in the contract
- Guaranteed additions accruing through the term
- Death benefit — the sum assured plus accrued guarantees
- Choice of lump sum or guaranteed income at maturity
- Loan facility against the policy after it acquires value
- Optional riders at additional premium
Typically not covered
- Any market-linked upside whatsoever
- Participation in later rate rises, since the rate is locked
- Inflation protection on the guaranteed amount
- Full value on early surrender
- Suicide within the first twelve months
- Death from material facts concealed at proposal
Inclusions and exclusions vary between providers and between plans from the same provider. The wording in your own policy document is what governs — we will walk you through it before you buy.
How it works with us
- 1 Start with the goal, not the plan A school fee in 2038, an income from 2045, an estate to pass on. The goal decides the structure; the brand is the last decision, not the first.
- 2 We separate the protection from the saving You see what the cover costs and what the savings portion is projected to return, as two numbers rather than one blended promise.
- 3 Compared against the honest alternative Term insurance plus a mutual fund, on the same premium and the same horizon. Sometimes this plan wins; often it does not, and we say so.
- 4 Proposal, medicals and financial underwriting Medicals arranged at home. For larger premiums, insurers assess income as well as health.
- 5 Issued, with the illustration on file We keep the benefit illustration you were shown, so what was promised is on record for the whole term.
Important considerations
The things a brochure tends to leave out. Read these before you decide.
- A locked rate cuts both ways. It protects you when rates fall and excludes you when they rise. Consider staggering purchases rather than committing everything at one rate.
- A guaranteed amount is guaranteed in rupees, not in purchasing power. Over twenty years inflation does most of the work against you.
- Ask for the internal rate of return rather than the total maturity figure. The absolute number always looks impressive over a long term; the annualised rate is the honest comparison.
- These plans work best against a specific dated obligation. Used for general accumulation, the gap against a market portfolio compounds badly.
- Early surrender is expensive. This is a hold-to-maturity instrument and should only be funded with premiums you are confident of sustaining.
Documents required
- Completed proposal form with full health disclosure
- Identity proof — Aadhaar, passport or PAN
- Address proof
- PAN card, mandatory for life insurance
- Income proof — Form 16, salary slips or filed returns
- Bank statements, for larger premiums
- Medical reports, where the insurer requires them
- Recent passport-size photograph
Frequently Asked Questions
How much return do these plans give?
Typically in the region of a long-dated fixed deposit. Ask for the internal rate of return rather than the maturity amount — over twenty years a large-looking total can represent a modest annual rate.
Is the guarantee actually reliable?
It is a contractual obligation of the insurer, backed by regulatory solvency requirements. As guarantees in financial products go, it is a strong one.
What if interest rates rise after I buy?
You stay at your locked rate, which is the cost of the guarantee. That is an argument for staggering purchases across a few years rather than committing your entire allocation at a single rate.
Is this better than a fixed deposit?
It locks the rate for far longer than any deposit will, and includes life cover with a different tax treatment. A deposit is liquid and simple. For a dated obligation fifteen years out, the guaranteed plan is usually the better fit; for accessible savings, the deposit is.
Can I take income instead of a lump sum?
Most contracts offer a guaranteed income option instead of a single maturity payment. It suits a retirement-adjacent goal well, and the choice is generally made at purchase rather than at maturity.
