Overview

Miscellaneous and special-purpose vehicles are those that are registered and road-legal but exist to do work rather than to travel: tractors, harvesters, cranes, excavators, forklifts, tankers and site equipment.

They present two exposures at once. On the road they behave like any other motor risk. On site they are plant, and the damage they cause and suffer while operating is the larger part of their risk profile — which is precisely the part a standard motor policy handles least well.

Getting cover right in this class is usually a question of pairing a motor policy with contractors' plant and machinery cover, rather than stretching one policy to do both jobs.

Who should consider it

Farmers with tractors and harvesters, construction contractors with earthmoving equipment, industrial operators with forklifts and site vehicles, and equipment rental businesses.

If your equipment spends most of its working life on a site rather than a road, read the considerations below before renewing a plain motor policy on it.

Benefits

  • Statutory third-party cover for vehicles that use public roads
  • Own damage cover appropriate to high-value working equipment
  • Operator cover under the statutory employee extension
  • Cover available for the working risk as well as the road risk
  • Seasonal-use structures for agricultural equipment
  • Pairs with contractors' plant and machinery cover for full site protection

What is covered, and what is not

Read the right-hand column first. It is the one that decides whether a claim is paid.

Typically covered

  • Third-party death, injury and property damage on public roads
  • Own damage from accident, fire and theft
  • Natural calamities and man-made perils
  • Operator and attendant under the statutory extension
  • Towing and removal after an accident
  • Damage during transportation to and from a site, where provided

Typically not covered

  • Damage occurring while the machine is working, on a road-only motor policy
  • Overturning during lifting or excavation, unless plant cover is in force
  • Damage to the load being lifted or moved
  • Operation by an untrained or unlicensed operator
  • Use outside the declared purpose or site
  • Wear, tear, mechanical breakdown and overheating

Inclusions and exclusions vary between providers and between plans from the same provider. The wording in your own policy document is what governs — we will walk you through it before you buy.

How it works with us

  1. 1 Send us the vehicle details Registration number, make and variant, year, and your current policy if you have one. Thirty seconds of typing.
  2. 2 We check what you are actually insured for IDV, add-ons, voluntary excess and no-claim bonus. Most renewals we see carry an IDV set years ago and never revisited.
  3. 3 Two or three quotes, compared on cover and not on price With the garage network in your city and each insurer's claim record put next to the premium.
  4. 4 Inspection where the law requires it A break in cover or a mid-term insurer change means an inspection. We arrange it, usually by video.
  5. 5 Policy issued, and we handle the claim when it comes You call us at the garage, not a helpline. We deal with the surveyor and the settlement.

Important considerations

The things a brochure tends to leave out. Read these before you decide.

  • A motor policy covers the road risk. The working risk — overturning while lifting, damage during excavation, harm to the load — generally needs contractors' plant and machinery cover alongside it.
  • Declare where the equipment actually works. Cover priced for a farm and used on a construction site is priced for the wrong risk.
  • Operator training records matter here more than in any other motor class. Untrained operation is both a safety failure and a clean claims defence for an insurer.
  • Hired-in equipment usually carries a contractual obligation to insure it. Read the hire agreement before assuming the owner's policy responds.
  • Value these machines on replacement cost rather than book value. Specialised equipment often costs far more to replace than its depreciated figure suggests.

Documents required

  • Registration certificate (RC) of the vehicle
  • Previous policy copy, for no-claim bonus and continuity
  • Driving licence of the owner or the usual driver
  • Identity and address proof
  • PAN card, where the premium crosses the reporting threshold
  • Invoice or delivery note, for a new vehicle
  • Vehicle inspection report, where there has been a break in cover

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my excavator covered while it is digging?

Not under a plain motor policy, which responds to road risk. Damage occurring during operation — overturning, striking a structure, harming the load — is the domain of contractors' plant and machinery cover. Most operators need both.

Does a tractor used only on my farm need insurance?

Third-party cover is required whenever it uses a public road, even briefly. Beyond that, own-damage cover is a commercial decision — but a tractor is usually one of the more valuable assets on a farm and is exposed to fire and theft regardless of where it is kept.

Is the operator covered?

Yes, under the statutory employee extension, provided they are lawfully employed and appropriately trained or licensed for the machine.

What about equipment I hire in?

Read the hire agreement. Most place the insurance obligation on the hirer for the period of hire, and a continuing hire charge while a damaged machine is repaired is a common and unwelcome surprise.

How should I set the insured value?

On replacement cost, not book value. Specialised machinery frequently costs considerably more to replace than a depreciation schedule suggests, and the gap only becomes visible at total loss.
