Overview

A ULIP splits your premium between life cover and investment in funds you select. The fund value moves with markets, the cover stays constant, and after a five-year lock-in you can withdraw partially or exit.

ULIPs deserve their historical reputation for opacity, and they have genuinely improved since. Charges are now capped and disclosed, allocation charges have largely disappeared from competitive products, and fund switching within the policy is free and does not trigger an immediate tax event.

The remaining question is not whether ULIPs are bad — modern ones are reasonable — but whether you need an insurance wrapper around your investments at all. For most investors, term insurance plus direct mutual funds is cheaper, more flexible and easier to understand. Where the wrapper genuinely helps, usually for tax or estate reasons, a modern ULIP is a defensible instrument.

Who should consider it

Investors with a horizon well beyond the five-year lock-in who value tax-free switching between equity and debt, particularly those who rebalance actively. Investors using insurance deliberately in estate planning.

First-time investors and anyone whose primary need is protection should start elsewhere: a term plan sized properly, and an SIP in a diversified fund. That combination is cheaper and does both jobs better.

Benefits

  • Free switching between equity and debt without an immediate tax event
  • Charges are now capped by regulation and disclosed in the illustration
  • Life cover throughout the investment period
  • Partial withdrawals permitted after the five-year lock-in
  • Section 80C on premium; Section 10(10D) on proceeds subject to conditions
  • Loyalty additions in later years on many contracts

What is covered, and what is not

Read the right-hand column first. It is the one that decides whether a claim is paid.

Typically covered

  • Investment across the fund options offered by the contract
  • Death benefit — the higher of sum assured or fund value, per contract
  • Maturity benefit at the fund value
  • Free and usually unlimited switching between funds
  • Partial withdrawal after the lock-in
  • Top-up premiums, where the contract allows

Typically not covered

  • Any guaranteed return
  • Access to funds during the five-year lock-in
  • Charges, which apply regardless of fund performance
  • Suicide within the first twelve months
  • Death from material facts concealed at proposal
  • Protection against market falls

Inclusions and exclusions vary between providers and between plans from the same provider. The wording in your own policy document is what governs — we will walk you through it before you buy.

How it works with us

  1. 1 Start with the goal, not the plan A school fee in 2038, an income from 2045, an estate to pass on. The goal decides the structure; the brand is the last decision, not the first.
  2. 2 We separate the protection from the saving You see what the cover costs and what the savings portion is projected to return, as two numbers rather than one blended promise.
  3. 3 Compared against the honest alternative Term insurance plus a mutual fund, on the same premium and the same horizon. Sometimes this plan wins; often it does not, and we say so.
  4. 4 Proposal, medicals and financial underwriting Medicals arranged at home. For larger premiums, insurers assess income as well as health.
  5. 5 Issued, with the illustration on file We keep the benefit illustration you were shown, so what was promised is on record for the whole term.

Important considerations

The things a brochure tends to leave out. Read these before you decide.

  • Tax-free switching is the genuine structural advantage over mutual funds, and it only matters if you actually rebalance. If you will not, that advantage is theoretical.
  • Compare against term plus direct mutual funds on the same premium. For most investors that comparison settles the question, and it settles it against the ULIP.
  • The five-year lock-in is absolute. Only commit money you will not need for at least that long, and preferably much longer.
  • Read the charge structure in the benefit illustration and total it in rupees over the full term. Capped charges are still charges.
  • Switch progressively to debt funds as your goal approaches. A ULIP maturing into a market fall is a very avoidable disappointment.

Documents required

  • Completed proposal form with full health disclosure
  • Identity proof — Aadhaar, passport or PAN
  • Address proof
  • PAN card, mandatory for life insurance
  • Income proof — Form 16, salary slips or filed returns
  • Bank statements, for larger premiums
  • Medical reports, where the insurer requires them
  • Recent passport-size photograph

Frequently Asked Questions

Are ULIPs still a bad deal?

Less so than they were. Charges are capped and disclosed, and allocation charges have largely gone from competitive products. The remaining question is whether you need the insurance wrapper at all — for most investors, term plus mutual funds is still cheaper and more flexible.

What is the real advantage over a mutual fund?

Switching between equity and debt inside the policy without triggering an immediate tax event. For an investor who genuinely rebalances, that is a real benefit. For one who buys and forgets, it is a benefit they will never use.

Can I withdraw before five years?

No. The lock-in is absolute. Discontinued policies move to a segregated fund earning a minimal return and are paid out only after the lock-in ends, so exiting early is expensive as well as slow.

How much life cover do I get?

Typically a multiple of the annual premium, and usually far less than a term plan at the same cost. Never treat a ULIP as your protection — hold a term plan sized to your family's actual needs alongside it.

What happens if markets fall near maturity?

The fund value falls with them. Most contracts allow switching to debt funds at no cost, and moving progressively into debt as maturity approaches is a sensible discipline rather than an optional one.
