Overview

A retirement income plan has two phases. During accumulation you pay premiums and the corpus builds. At vesting, the corpus converts into an income — either through the plan itself or by purchasing an annuity — that continues for a defined period or for life.

Its value lies in removing two specific risks. Longevity risk, the possibility of outliving your savings, and sequence risk, the possibility of retiring into a market downturn that permanently reduces your income. Both are real, and neither is addressed by simply holding equity into retirement.

The cost of removing them is return. These plans generally deliver less over the accumulation phase than a diversified portfolio would. The sensible structure for most people is a blend — market-linked growth for the bulk of the corpus, and a guaranteed income layer sized to cover essential expenses.

Who should consider it

People within fifteen years of retirement who want a floor under their retirement income. The self-employed, who have no employer pension behind them. Anyone who would find managing a drawdown portfolio in their seventies stressful.

Younger savers are usually better served accumulating in equity and converting to guaranteed income closer to retirement, when the certainty is actually needed.

Benefits

  • A defined income you cannot outlive, on the lifetime options
  • Removes sequence risk at the point it matters most
  • Life cover during the accumulation phase
  • Section 80C on premium; part of the maturity corpus may be commuted tax-free
  • Joint-life options that continue paying a surviving spouse
  • Enforced long-term saving with no temptation to withdraw

What is covered, and what is not

Read the right-hand column first. It is the one that decides whether a claim is paid.

Typically covered

  • Accumulation of the corpus over the deferment period
  • Life cover during accumulation
  • Vesting benefit — the corpus available at the retirement date
  • Commutation of a portion as a lump sum, within the permitted limit
  • Regular income for a defined term or for life
  • Joint-life continuation for a spouse, where selected

Typically not covered

  • Any inflation protection, unless an escalating income option is chosen
  • Full flexibility to withdraw the corpus after vesting
  • Market-linked upside on guaranteed variants
  • Surrender at full value in the early years
  • Death from material facts concealed at proposal
  • Changes to the annuity option once income has commenced

Inclusions and exclusions vary between providers and between plans from the same provider. The wording in your own policy document is what governs — we will walk you through it before you buy.

How it works with us

  1. 1 Start with the goal, not the plan A school fee in 2038, an income from 2045, an estate to pass on. The goal decides the structure; the brand is the last decision, not the first.
  2. 2 We separate the protection from the saving You see what the cover costs and what the savings portion is projected to return, as two numbers rather than one blended promise.
  3. 3 Compared against the honest alternative Term insurance plus a mutual fund, on the same premium and the same horizon. Sometimes this plan wins; often it does not, and we say so.
  4. 4 Proposal, medicals and financial underwriting Medicals arranged at home. For larger premiums, insurers assess income as well as health.
  5. 5 Issued, with the illustration on file We keep the benefit illustration you were shown, so what was promised is on record for the whole term.

Important considerations

The things a brochure tends to leave out. Read these before you decide.

  • A level income looks adequate at sixty and thin at eighty. If the plan offers an escalating option, price it — inflation over a twenty-five-year retirement is the real risk here.
  • The annuity option chosen at vesting is usually irreversible. Take advice at that decision specifically; it matters more than the choice of plan.
  • Use this for the essential-expenses layer of retirement income and hold market-linked assets for the rest. All-guaranteed is expensive; all-market is uncomfortable at eighty.
  • Annuity income is taxable in the year received. Factor that into the income you actually need rather than the gross figure quoted.
  • If retirement is more than fifteen years away, accumulating in equity and converting later usually produces a larger income than locking into a guarantee now.

Documents required

  • Completed proposal form with full health disclosure
  • Identity proof — Aadhaar, passport or PAN
  • Address proof
  • PAN card, mandatory for life insurance
  • Income proof — Form 16, salary slips or filed returns
  • Bank statements, for larger premiums
  • Medical reports, where the insurer requires them
  • Recent passport-size photograph

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from just investing for retirement?

Investing builds a corpus; this converts a corpus into an income you cannot outlive. The distinction matters at eighty-five, when a drawdown portfolio can be exhausted and a lifetime annuity cannot. The cost of that certainty is lower expected returns during accumulation.

Can I take the whole amount as a lump sum at retirement?

Only a portion — commutation limits apply, with the balance converting to income. If unrestricted access matters more to you than guaranteed income, this is the wrong instrument.

Is the income taxable?

Annuity income is taxable as income in the year you receive it. The commuted lump sum is treated differently. Plan around the net figure rather than the gross quote.

What happens to the money when I die?

It depends on the option chosen. A joint-life option continues paying your spouse. A period-certain option pays for the remaining guaranteed years. A single-life option ends. This choice is generally permanent, so make it deliberately.

Should I put all my retirement savings here?

No. The sensible structure is a guaranteed income layer covering essential expenses — housing, food, medicines, utilities — with market-linked assets funding everything else. All-guaranteed costs too much in forgone return; all-market is uncomfortable at an advanced age.
