Overview

A child plan is a long-term savings contract with a life cover on the parent, timed to release money when education costs fall due. Its distinguishing feature is the waiver of premium benefit: if the parent dies, the insurer pays the remaining premiums and the plan still matures on schedule.

That feature is genuinely valuable and has no equivalent in a mutual fund. An SIP stops when the person funding it stops. A child plan with waiver of premium does not, which is the strongest argument in its favour.

The weaker argument is returns. A guaranteed child plan will generally return less than a diversified equity portfolio over an eighteen-year horizon. The honest comparison is a term plan plus an SIP against this plan — protection plus growth against protection plus certainty — and which wins depends on how much you value the guarantee.

Who should consider it

Parents who want education funding to survive their own death, particularly a single-earner household. Parents who will not maintain a separate SIP with discipline over eighteen years.

Parents comfortable with market risk and confident in their own discipline will usually accumulate more through a term plan plus an equity SIP. That is a legitimate route and we will help you build it.

Benefits

  • Waiver of premium means the plan completes even if the parent dies
  • Payouts timed to education milestones rather than a single maturity date
  • Guaranteed variants remove market risk from a non-negotiable goal
  • Life cover on the parent runs alongside the savings
  • Section 80C on premium; maturity generally exempt under Section 10(10D)
  • Enforces a long-term saving habit that many households do not sustain otherwise

What is covered, and what is not

Read the right-hand column first. It is the one that decides whether a claim is paid.

Typically covered

  • Death benefit to the nominee on the parent's death
  • Waiver of all future premiums after a death claim
  • Maturity benefit at the scheduled dates, paid regardless
  • Staggered payouts aligned to school and university milestones
  • Guaranteed additions or bonuses, depending on the variant
  • Optional riders for critical illness and accidental death

Typically not covered

  • Any guarantee of return on the unit-linked variants
  • Suicide by the life assured within the first twelve months
  • Full value on early surrender — surrender values are poor in early years
  • Withdrawals during the lock-in period
  • Death from material facts concealed at proposal
  • Inflation protection, unless the plan explicitly escalates payouts

Inclusions and exclusions vary between providers and between plans from the same provider. The wording in your own policy document is what governs — we will walk you through it before you buy.

How it works with us

  1. 1 Start with the goal, not the plan A school fee in 2038, an income from 2045, an estate to pass on. The goal decides the structure; the brand is the last decision, not the first.
  2. 2 We separate the protection from the saving You see what the cover costs and what the savings portion is projected to return, as two numbers rather than one blended promise.
  3. 3 Compared against the honest alternative Term insurance plus a mutual fund, on the same premium and the same horizon. Sometimes this plan wins; often it does not, and we say so.
  4. 4 Proposal, medicals and financial underwriting Medicals arranged at home. For larger premiums, insurers assess income as well as health.
  5. 5 Issued, with the illustration on file We keep the benefit illustration you were shown, so what was promised is on record for the whole term.

Important considerations

The things a brochure tends to leave out. Read these before you decide.

  • Confirm that waiver of premium is included and not an optional extra. Without it, this is an ordinary savings plan and most of its advantage disappears.
  • Compare against a term plan plus an SIP on the same premium and horizon. Over eighteen years the difference in projected corpus is usually large.
  • Education inflation runs well ahead of general inflation. A payout fixed today at today's fee levels will fall short; size it against projected fees.
  • Early surrender is punished heavily. Only commit a premium you are confident of sustaining for the full term.
  • The life cover on these plans is modest. Do not let it substitute for a proper term policy sized to your family's actual needs.

Documents required

  • Completed proposal form with full health disclosure
  • Identity proof — Aadhaar, passport or PAN
  • Address proof
  • PAN card, mandatory for life insurance
  • Income proof — Form 16, salary slips or filed returns
  • Bank statements, for larger premiums
  • Medical reports, where the insurer requires them
  • Recent passport-size photograph

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a child plan better than an SIP for education?

It depends on which risk you are more worried about. An SIP will very likely accumulate more over eighteen years, but it stops if you do. A child plan with waiver of premium completes itself after your death — protection an SIP cannot replicate. Many parents run a term plan plus an SIP and get both; that is usually the more efficient route.

What exactly does waiver of premium do?

If the parent dies, the insurer pays all remaining premiums and the plan continues to maturity as though nothing had happened. The child still receives the scheduled payouts on the scheduled dates. It is the single feature that justifies the product.

Can I withdraw money early if I need it?

Only after the lock-in, and with penalties. Surrender values in early years are poor. Treat this as committed money for a fixed purpose rather than as accessible savings.

Should the child be the life assured?

No. The point of the cover is to protect the funding, and the person funding it is the parent. Insuring the child protects nothing financially. Any plan structured the other way round deserves a second look.

Will the maturity amount keep up with fees?

Not unless the plan escalates payouts. Education inflation has consistently outpaced general inflation, so a fixed payout set against today's fees will fall short of tomorrow's. Size it against projected costs, not current ones.
