Overview

An Indian health policy taken by a non-resident does two jobs. It covers treatment during visits home, which for many families is where planned procedures happen anyway. And it starts the waiting-period clock now, so that the policy is fully mature on the day residency changes.

The second job is the one that matters most, and it is routinely missed. A non-resident who waits until they return to India to buy cover buys it at an older age, often after a diagnosis, and then waits two to four more years before existing conditions become claimable. Holding a policy through the non-resident years removes all of that.

What such a policy does not do is cover treatment abroad. It is an Indian contract for Indian hospitalisation. Cover where you live is a separate arrangement, usually through your employer or a local insurer.

Who should consider it

Non-residents who visit India regularly, who intend to return at some point, or who want a policy in place for a period of extended stay. It is also the practical way to put cover over parents in India while paying from abroad.

It suits students and early-career professionals abroad particularly well, because entry at that age is cheap and the waiting periods will be long behind them by the time they matter.

Benefits

  • Waiting periods run while you are abroad, so the policy is mature when you return
  • Entry premium is fixed at today's age rather than at the age you repatriate
  • Covers planned and emergency treatment during visits to India
  • Premium can generally be paid from an NRE or NRO account
  • Continues seamlessly on repatriation with no fresh underwriting
  • Can be used to arrange and fund cover for parents living in India

What is covered, and what is not

Read the right-hand column first. It is the one that decides whether a claim is paid.

Typically covered

  • Hospitalisation in India for 24 hours or more
  • Pre and post-hospitalisation within the stated windows
  • Day-care procedures
  • ICU charges, subject to any limit
  • Ambulance charges up to the policy limit
  • Cashless treatment at Indian network hospitals
  • Annual health check-up, where the plan provides it

Typically not covered

  • Treatment taken outside India, unless the plan carries a specific global extension
  • Pre-existing conditions inside the waiting period
  • The initial 30-day waiting period, accidents excepted
  • Named ailments inside their own waiting period
  • Maternity, unless the plan includes the benefit
  • Conditions not disclosed at proposal, including any diagnosed abroad
  • Evacuation or repatriation costs, which are a travel-insurance function

Inclusions and exclusions vary between providers and between plans from the same provider. The wording in your own policy document is what governs — we will walk you through it before you buy.

How it works with us

  1. 1 Tell us who is being covered Age, city, existing conditions and any cover you already hold. Two minutes, and it decides everything downstream.
  2. 2 We shortlist on structure, not price Room rent, co-payment, sub-limits and pre-existing waiting periods — the four things that decide what you actually get paid.
  3. 3 You see two or three options, with the trade-offs named Including what each one gives up. If your existing policy is already the right answer, we will tell you that.
  4. 4 Proposal and medicals We help you complete disclosure properly. A medical test, where required, is usually arranged at home.
  5. 5 Policy issued, and we stay on the file At claim time you call us, not a helpline. We prepare the file, submit it and chase the insurer until it settles.

Important considerations

The things a brochure tends to leave out. Read these before you decide.

  • This is not a substitute for health cover where you live. It is an Indian policy for Indian treatment.
  • Disclose conditions diagnosed abroad exactly as you would one diagnosed here. Underwriting does not care where the diagnosis happened; claims certainly will.
  • Time medical tests to a visit home. Requiring them in your country of residence complicates issuance and sometimes delays it past your departure.
  • Where the primary purpose is cover for parents in India, buy a policy in their name and pay for it. Adding them to a policy of yours is usually the more expensive route.
  • The Section 80D deduction is only useful against Indian taxable income. For many non-residents the reason to hold this policy is continuity, not tax.

Documents required

  • Completed proposal form with full medical disclosure
  • Identity proof — Aadhaar, passport, voter ID or driving licence
  • Address proof
  • PAN card
  • Recent passport-size photograph
  • Medical reports, where the insurer requires them at your age or sum insured
  • Existing policy copy, if you are porting

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a non-resident buy an Indian health policy?

Yes. Indian insurers issue retail health policies to non-residents, with the cover operating for treatment in India. Some ask for medical tests to be completed during a visit, and some restrict issuance for particular countries of residence, so it is worth confirming before you start.

Does it cover me where I currently live?

No. Unless the plan carries an explicit global extension, it covers hospitalisation in India only. Keep local cover in place for where you live and treat this as the Indian half of the arrangement.

What happens when I move back permanently?

Nothing changes. The policy continues on its existing terms with the waiting periods you have already served — which is the main reason to hold it during the non-resident years rather than buying on arrival.

How do I pay the premium?

Generally from an NRE or NRO account. Insurers differ on which they accept and on how they handle renewals from abroad, so set up the mandate at issuance rather than at the first renewal.

Can I use it for my parents in India?

You can pay for a policy in their name, which is usually the better structure. Adding them to your own floater re-prices the whole policy on their age and puts your cover in reach of their claims.
