Frequently Asked Questions

View All FAQs
Should I stop my SIP when markets fall?

No — this is the single most damaging thing an SIP investor can do. A falling market is when your fixed amount buys the most units, and stopping means missing exactly the instalments that do the most work. If anything, a fall is the moment to continue without flinching.

Does an SIP guarantee better returns than a lumpsum?

No. In a consistently rising market a lumpsum invested early does better, because more money is exposed for longer. An SIP wins on behaviour: it removes timing decisions and keeps you invested through periods when you would otherwise have stopped.

How much should I invest monthly?

An amount you can sustain through a difficult year, not the maximum you can manage in a good month. Consistency matters more than size, and an SIP you stop after eight months achieves very little.

What is a step-up SIP?

One that increases automatically each year, typically by a fixed percentage. Set at around ten per cent it roughly tracks income growth, is barely noticeable month to month, and makes a substantial difference to the corpus over fifteen or twenty years.

Can I lose money in an SIP?

Yes. Mutual fund investments are subject to market risk and an SIP averages your cost rather than protecting your capital. Over long horizons that averaging has historically helped, but there is no guarantee, and past performance does not indicate future returns.
