Our Insurance Partners

We represent multiple providers to help you find the most suitable option at the best price.

Overview

Third-party insurance is compulsory for every motor vehicle used on a public road in India. It pays other people for injury, death and property damage you cause. It pays you nothing, ever, for your own vehicle.

The premium is set by the regulator and is identical across insurers for the same vehicle class, so there is nothing to shop for on price. What differs between insurers is service at claim time, which is the only real basis for choosing one.

Liability for death and bodily injury is unlimited by statute. Property damage is capped. Both are paid to the other party, and the size of an injury award has no relationship to the size of your premium — which is the strongest argument against treating this as adequate cover.

Who should consider it

It is the legal minimum for every vehicle on the road. As a deliberate choice, it makes sense for an old vehicle with low market value, used infrequently, where the owner accepts the full cost of any damage or theft.

For anything else — a car under ten years old, a two-wheeler you depend on, any vehicle whose loss would hurt — it is the wrong choice. Comprehensive cover on an older vehicle costs less than most owners expect.

Benefits

  • Meets the statutory requirement, without which use on a public road is an offence
  • Unlimited cover for third-party death and bodily injury
  • Regulated premium, identical across insurers for the same class
  • Low cost, which is the whole of its appeal
  • Includes compulsory personal accident cover for the owner-driver
  • Available even where a vehicle is too old for comprehensive cover

What is covered, and what is not

Read the right-hand column first. It is the one that decides whether a claim is paid.

Typically covered

  • Death or bodily injury to a third party — unlimited by statute
  • Third-party property damage up to the statutory limit
  • Legal costs of defending a third-party claim
  • Compulsory personal accident cover for the owner-driver
  • Liability arising anywhere in India where the vehicle is lawfully used

Typically not covered

  • All damage to your own vehicle, from any cause whatsoever
  • Theft of your own vehicle
  • Fire and natural calamity damage to your own vehicle
  • Injury to yourself beyond the compulsory accident cover
  • Damage to property you own or are responsible for
  • Driving without a valid licence or under the influence

Inclusions and exclusions vary between providers and between plans from the same provider. The wording in your own policy document is what governs — we will walk you through it before you buy.

How it works with us

  1. 1 Send us the vehicle details Registration number, make and variant, year, and your current policy if you have one. Thirty seconds of typing.
  2. 2 We check what you are actually insured for IDV, add-ons, voluntary excess and no-claim bonus. Most renewals we see carry an IDV set years ago and never revisited.
  3. 3 Two or three quotes, compared on cover and not on price With the garage network in your city and each insurer's claim record put next to the premium.
  4. 4 Inspection where the law requires it A break in cover or a mid-term insurer change means an inspection. We arrange it, usually by video.
  5. 5 Policy issued, and we handle the claim when it comes You call us at the garage, not a helpline. We deal with the surveyor and the settlement.

Important considerations

The things a brochure tends to leave out. Read these before you decide.

  • This policy will never pay you a rupee for your own vehicle. If that sentence is uncomfortable, this is not the right cover.
  • Since the premium is regulated and identical, choose the insurer on claim service and network rather than on price. There is no price to compare.
  • On a vehicle more than about ten years old, run the comprehensive quote before defaulting to third-party. The IDV is low, so the premium is often far closer than owners assume.
  • The compulsory owner-driver accident cover is modest. A standalone personal accident policy costs very little and does considerably more.
  • Third-party property damage is capped by statute. A claim involving an expensive vehicle can exceed it, and the excess is yours.

Documents required

  • Registration certificate (RC) of the vehicle
  • Previous policy copy, for no-claim bonus and continuity
  • Driving licence of the owner or the usual driver
  • Identity and address proof
  • PAN card, where the premium crosses the reporting threshold
  • Invoice or delivery note, for a new vehicle
  • Vehicle inspection report, where there has been a break in cover

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the premium the same everywhere?

Because the regulator sets third-party rates by vehicle class. No insurer can discount or load them. The only meaningful difference between insurers on this product is how they handle a claim.

Does it cover theft of my vehicle?

No. Theft, fire, flood and accident damage to your own vehicle are all outside a third-party policy. It responds only to what you owe other people.

Is unlimited liability really unlimited?

For death and bodily injury, yes — the statute places no ceiling, and tribunal awards can be very large. Third-party property damage is capped at the statutory limit, and anything above that is your personal liability.

My car is fifteen years old. Should I stay on third-party?

Get the comprehensive quote before deciding. A low IDV means a low own-damage premium, and the difference is often smaller than owners expect — particularly once theft and flood risk are considered.

Do I still get personal accident cover?

Yes, the compulsory owner-driver cover is attached. Treat it as a statutory floor rather than as protection you have chosen, and hold a proper personal accident policy alongside it.
