Health cover is the policy people buy most casually and understand least. A few structural details decide whether a claim is paid in full or in part.
What it actually pays for
A health policy pays for hospitalisation — admission, treatment, and usually a window before and after. Consultations, diagnostics and medicines outside that window are only covered if the policy specifically includes OPD.
The clauses that decide your claim
Room rent limits, co-payment, disease-wise sub-limits and waiting periods for pre-existing conditions do more to shape your final settlement than the headline sum insured. A policy with a room rent cap can proportionately reduce every line of your bill, not just the room charge.
How much cover is sensible
In a metro, a single serious hospitalisation can run past ₹8–10 lakh. A base policy of ₹10 lakh with a super top-up above it usually costs less than a single large policy for the same total cover.
Group cover is not your cover
Employer cover ends when the job does, and it usually ends at the worst possible time. Hold something in your own name alongside it, bought while you are healthy enough to be accepted.
Before you decide
Everything above is general. What is right for you depends on what you are protecting, what you already hold, and what you can sustain. That is a fifteen-minute conversation, and it is free.
