Life insurance covers a spectrum from pure protection to long-horizon savings. Knowing which end of it you are buying prevents most of the disappointment.
Protection versus savings
Term plans are pure protection. Endowment, money-back, whole life and ULIPs bundle protection with savings or investment. Bundling is not automatically wrong, but it is almost always more expensive per rupee of cover.
Where guaranteed plans fit
A guaranteed return plan locks a known outcome, which suits money you genuinely cannot risk. The trade-off is a lower return than market-linked options over long horizons, and limited liquidity.
ULIPs, honestly
A ULIP is an investment in a market-linked fund with an insurance wrapper and a five-year lock-in. Charges have fallen a great deal, but it is still a market product — returns are not assured.
The order that usually works
Cover the risk first with term, build an emergency fund, then invest for goals. Buying a savings-linked policy before adequate protection is the most common sequencing mistake we see.
Before you decide
Everything above is general. What is right for you depends on what you are protecting, what you already hold, and what you can sustain. That is a fifteen-minute conversation, and it is free.
