A travel policy costs less than a single airport meal and covers the one thing that could genuinely ruin you abroad — a hospital bill in a foreign currency.
What it really covers
Emergency medical treatment abroad is the core benefit. Trip cancellation, baggage loss, flight delay and passport loss are useful additions but rarely the reason to buy.
Schengen and visa requirements
Schengen visas require a minimum of €30,000 medical cover with repatriation. Several other countries have their own thresholds. Check before you book, not before you fly.
Pre-existing conditions
Most travel policies exclude pre-existing conditions unless declared and accepted, sometimes with an additional premium. A declared condition costs a little; an undeclared one costs the claim.
Student and multi-trip policies
Students abroad need cover that extends across the academic year and often satisfies the university's own requirement. Frequent flyers usually save with an annual multi-trip policy after roughly three trips.
Before you decide
Everything above is general. What is right for you depends on what you are protecting, what you already hold, and what you can sustain. That is a fifteen-minute conversation, and it is free.
